When serious medical conditions, rehabilitation needs, or advanced care requirements exceed what home or assisted living can provide, skilled nursing facilities offer 24-hour medical care and supervision. You may need this level of care if your loved one requires ongoing nursing care, needs intensive rehabilitation after surgery or illness, has complex medical conditions requiring frequent monitoring, cannot perform most daily activities, or needs advanced care for chronic conditions. 

Skilled nursing facilities, often called nursing homes, are staffed by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants who provide round-the-clock medical supervision and assistance. These facilities offer both short-term rehabilitation stays and long-term residential care, with access to physicians, therapists, and specialized medical equipment. 

Services include 24-hour skilled nursing care, medication management, physical and occupational therapy, assistance with all daily activities, specialized medical treatments and wound care, and coordinated physician care.
